RECP: post event report

‘Supporting Bulgarian renewable energy companies developing African markets’

We have held a workshop on 13 December 2017 under the RECP programme.

The event was organized for Bulgarian companies which have an interest in strengthening their business in the region of Sub Saharan Africa.

The programme, where you can find all presentations for download, has addressed both business development, matchmaking with local partners and access to finance as main themes. Apart from a number of introductory presentations, we have learned from two Bulgarian companies which have seen recent successes in African markets as well.

After the presentation, all participants had the opportunity to have a bilateral meeting with the RECP representative to discuss business ideas for exporting RES related products and services to the SSA and collaborating with local partner organisations.

 About RECP

The Africa-EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme (RECP) is a multi-donor programme that supports the development of markets for renewable energy in Africa. It was launched by more than 35 African and European Ministers and Commissioners under the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP). For more information, visit the website of this programme.

By catalysing the development of African renewable energy markets, the RECP contributes to:

  1. Promoting access to energy supporting sustainable economic growth and poverty eradication, within a sustainable development path.
  2. Developing value chains providing employment opportunities for men and women and business opportunities for African and European businesses.
  3. Enhancing energy security and mitigating the impacts of volatile fossil fuel prices.
  4. Climate change mitigation by substituting fossil fuels, and to climate change adaptation by enhanced energy value chain and energy system resilience.

RECP Objectives

The RECP focusses on multi-million Euro investments, related to all renewable energy resources employed. Such projects have substantial potential for increasing energy access and simultaneously provide local benefits. The RECP is based on an integrated approach of interlinked activities organised in four Action Areas geared towards enabling and triggering investment. The two Action Areas addressed in our workshop in Sofia are

A. Private Sector Cooperation

Facilitate African and European business cooperation for co-investment, exchange of expertise and technology and promote investment in Africa’s renewable energy markets.

B. Access to Finance

Support renewable energy projects to reach bankability, assisting valuable project ideas to develop into concrete investment opportunities.

Next to the presentations of the RECP and doing business related to renewable energy in Sub Saharan Africa, the event in Sofia will also facilitate one-on-one meetings with the RECP expert, which can provide suggestions for matchmaking with companies and organisations in Sub Saharan Africa, using the well established relations with a number of partner organisations.
